O Adonai

December 18, 2012 · Filed Under: liturgical calendar, prayer ·

 18 Dec O Adonai
O Adonai, et Dux domus Israel,
qui Moysi in igne flammae rubi apparuisti,
et ei in Sina legem dedisti:
veni ad redimendum nos in brachio extento.
O Adonai and leader of Israel, you appeared to Moses in a burning bush and you gave him the Law on Sinai. O Come and save us with your mighty power.
Could it be that the Lord sometimes comes to us in a dangerous way? As fire? As a voice on a mountaintop dictating commandments?
We talk about having our hearts set on fire often without acknowledging what a violent image that is. Fire can be painful and frightening. But like the burning bush, we are not consumed or destroyed by God’s fire. We remain ourselves, and perhaps more perfectly so.
