7 Quick Takes, Volume 10

Summer ends now, now, barbarous in beauty… It’s getting to be just about time for a depressed post about how the weather affects my mood, but I just can’t summon the energy to write it. Symptom # 2 of autumn: lethargy. I’m happy for everyone who loves cold evenings and thick sweaters, but I’m not one of those people. Expect a grumpy fall post sometime next week.

Audition season is in full swing! I had two this past weekend, and another three coming up the next three days. If I had known that singing would involve so much “putting in a nice dress and being judged” I’m not sure I would have gone into it. Ten years into my auditioning life, I think I have come to terms with the rejection (most days), so it only fazes me once in a while.

Since the media is hanging on to Mitt Romney’s secret-videotape-quotes, I have had countless opportunities this week to think to myself “Holy Cow did he really say that???” And each time the answer is yes, he really did.

Three weeks until the half-marathon! My long runs have been good but my weekday runs have been infrequent at best. For the next few weeks I have to make more of an effort to get out there on weekdays. (Note my many auditions. If I could go to them sweating in my running clothes I’d be a lot more efficient).

It’s already time to start planning music for Advent Lessons & Carols. Church musicians are often stuck a few liturgical seasons ahead of everyone else. That’s probably why I had Conditor Alme Siderum stuck in my head two days ago.

Yesterday, after a prolonged conversation about liturgical music, I offered someone a ride so she didn’t have to take a cab. As if on cue, she opened the passenger door to find a scene reminiscent of a hymnal explosion. I’m not lying when I say church music takes over my life.

My brother is finally back on the right coast after his summer in the Midwest. Even though he’s an hour and a half away, I still feel better knowing he’s closer. Such is the plight of the big sister.

Wish me luck on my auditions, and have a great weekend!
